Cancer Prevention

Avoid Carcinogens

Chemicals

There is mounting evidence that many natural and especially human-made chemicals, drugs and air pollution either cause or promote cancer.

There are too many of these substances to list here. Each year the Federal Government produces a report of substances linked to cancer, the most recent report had 220 names on it.

We have no control over our genetic makeup, age or gender, but we can control our exposures and lifestyle.

CISN Tips:

We encourage you to learn about environmental carcinogens from organizations such as the National Institute of Environmental Health Services, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, and the Collaborative for Health and the Environment.

The Sun

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation comes from the sun, sunlamps, and tanning booths. It causes early aging of the skin and skin damage that can lead to skin cancer.

Also called UV Radiation, ultraviolet radiation consists of invisible rays that are part of the energy that comes from the sun. Ultraviolet radiation that reaches the Earth's surface is made up of two types of rays, called UVA and UVB. Ultraviolet radiation also comes from sun lamps and tanning beds. Research indicates that ultraviolet radiation causes skin damage, premature aging, melanoma, and other types of skin cancer, as well as problems with the eyes and the immune system.

CISN Tips:
  • Use sun screen
  • Do not use tanning booths
  • Stay out of the sun from Noon until 3:00
  • Wear clothing to avoid sun exposure

Viruses & Bacteria

Infectious agents such as viruses and bacteria contribute to the development of some cancers. The human papilloma virus (HPV), Hepatitis B and C, the Epstein Barr Virus, and others are associated with different types of cancer.

CISN Tips:
  • Practice safe sex
  • Practice honest communication with sexual partners.
  • Do not share or re-use needles

Ionizing Radiation

Ionizing radiation can cause cell damage that leads to cancer. This kind of radiation comes from rays that enter the Earth's atmosphere from outer space, radioactive fallout, radon gas, x-rays, and other sources.

Summary:

As hard as we try, we are not always able to eliminate all of our exposure. That is why it is even more important to follow a healthy lifestyle.

CISN Tips:
  • Remove harmful factors in your control.
  • Read about What Causes Cancer.
  • Try to minimize the number of medical x-rays your have.
